Fundamentals of Volunteering

Attend a one-day training that includes presentations by MDC Iowa program directors and volunteers
-
Teach or co-teach one or more STEM classes or events throughout the year based on individual availability
-
Assist in school or after school programs for a few hours one day per week, if retired, or a few hours every two to three weeks if still working

Volunteers are assigned to a program, class or event based on individual preferences, geographic distances, and time commitment
Once accepted to the program, a volunteer may:

Work with individual/teams of students and/or adult learners to encourage questions about STEM topics

Relate STEM to real-world experiences

Be a resource for students and adult learners

Collaborate in the development of activities and/or programs MDC Iowa staff

Explore opportunities for field trips/other programs

Advise students during lab experiments, scientific investigations, and projects

Add a practical perspective to presentations if needed

Work with MDC Iowa staff to enhance/improve course content

Make presentations based on your expertise when appropriate

Help MDC Iowa staff design experimental challenges
